Semiotics Triptych

Artist Statement
The theme I chose to represent in my work is the theme of the Unknown. This theme is ever-present in every person’s life, whether it be endured or enjoyed. I often choose to enjoy the unknown as it presents itself in my life. The icon (right) shows a gradient background with a purple object moving withing, crossing a seemingly floating rectangle, ultimately forming the shape of an X. The X, often shown in research as a stand in for what is unknown. The symbol (middle) shows purples and blues spiraling around from withing the paper. The spiral representing what the unknown can feel like when it takes control. The index (left) shows a familiar purple shape moving within the blue and purple…? Background, shapes of all sizes and colors float almost motionless. The shapes are almost broken fragments of something that once was, but what? I wanted to keep the idea and composition relatively simple going into each work. This is due to wanting to keep the theme not only in the work but also through the process of doing this work. This being having some parts of each work unknown at the start and add into the work as I go on. I decided to use chalk pastels for these as I like how the colors blend into each other, this way I can keep a relatively simple color pallet while still creating a wide range of colors.
